LIFE SWITCH2O

An innovative, decentralized, and fully circular water treatment plant in the Noorderhoek district of Sneek. That is the goal of the LIFE SWITCH2O project, part of the EU program LIFE – European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. The project encompasses 207 homes (145 houses and 62 apartments). SWITCH2O started in 2025 and runs as a project until 2030.

Goals

• Reducing the use of clean drinking water
• Producing drinking water quality water from wastewater
• Ensuring maximum recovery of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus
• Energy conservation and generation of sustainable energy

To achieve these goals, SWITCH2O aims to demonstrate a unique combination of purification techniques. If successful, this approach can be scaled up to districts throughout the Netherlands and Europe.
